Study finds record Earth warming, no evidence climate change is accelerating

The rate Earth is warming hit an all-time high in 2023, with 92% of last year’s surprising record-shattering heat caused by humans, top scientists calculated.

The group of 57 scientists from around the world used United Nations-approved methods to examine what’s behind last year’s deadly burst of heat. They said even with a faster warming rate they don’t see evidence of significant acceleration in human-caused climate change beyond increased fossil fuel burning. Continued …

Another ‘shocking’ heat record set in May

May marked the Earth’s 12th consecutive month of record-breaking temperatures, with more heat waves expected this summer.

The European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported that overall temperatures globally in May were 1.52 degrees Celsius above historical averages and marked the hottest May on record. Continued …

Plastic pollution at Thai beaches

Picture a stroll on Thailand’s beautiful coastline, feeling the fine grains of sand between your toes and the spectacle of the setting sun on the horizon. However, an alarming reality juxtaposes this idyllic scene – the sight of plastic waste littering the stretch of sand, a picture that starkly contrasts the otherwise natural beauty.

This unsettling image reflects the magnitude of the plastic pollution crisis in Thailand, a situation that has expanded to cause considerable concerns. At the helm of this escalating problem, local entities such as Trash Hero and EcoThailand have bravely accepted the responsibility, striving tirelessly to address the issue. Yet, in spite of these commendable initiatives, the influx of plastic waste remains unabated. Continued …

‘Decoupling’ unrealistic for China, SE Asia’s solar sectors despite US protectionist push

The U.S. duty-free tariff treatment for solar power items from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam will end as scheduled today, according to an announcement by the White House in May. The move is seen by some as the latest sign that the U.S. may expand its crackdown on the photovoltaic (PV) industry from China to Southeast Asian countries.

The U.S. Department of Commerce claimed in 2023 that “certain Chinese producers are shipping their solar products through Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and/or Vietnam for minor processing in an attempt to avoid paying anti-dumping and countervailing duties.” Continued …

Chinese solar firms halting output in Southeast Asia

Chinese solar firms are halting production at factories in Southeast Asia as increased U.S. trade barriers create uncertainty for exports from the region.

Longi Green Energy Technology Co. began gradually winding down activity at a plant in Malaysia this week after halting all five production lines at a facility in Vietnam the week before. Continued …

Trina Solar Denies Shutdown, Says Thai, Vietnamese Plants to Start Routine Maintenance

Trina Solar is pausing production in Thailand for regular maintenance, which takes place annually at its factories in Thailand and Vietnam around this time each year, the Chinese solar giant said in response to rumors claiming that the firm is halting manufacturing in Thailand.

Trina’s factories in Thailand and Vietnam mainly serve the U.S. market, where there may be short-term fluctuations in demand, a company executive said. The Changzhou-based firm will optimize production based on industry and market conditions. Continued …
