Environmental plan for eastern corridor gets nod

The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) board has approved the environment-management plan for the government’s flagship industrial project, which was drafted by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to limit its impact on local communities and the environment.

Foreign investment now includes sustainability focus

The foreign direct investment (FDI) landscape is shifting due to geopolitical factors, with investment trends now focusing more on environmental sustainability and incorporating technology to streamline value chains, according to a new report by UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) titled “Global Economic Fracturing and Shifting Investment Patterns”.

FDI has long served as an economic driver for many countries. According to the World Investment Report 2023 by UNCTAD, Thailand accumulated FDI valued at $306.163 billion, ranking second in ASEAN after Singapore ($2.3 trillion), followed closely by Indonesia ($262.920 billion), Vietnam ($210.471 billion), and Malaysia ($199.206 billion). It was a similar picture in 2022, though Indonesia, Vietnam and Malaysia beat Thailand’s $10.034 billion in the investment stakes with $21.968 billion, $17.900 billion and $16.940 billion, respectively. Panasonic Energy to Collect and Recycle Used Dry Batteries in Thailand

Panasonic Energy Co., a Panasonic Group company, has established a scheme to recycle used dry batteries through 7-Eleven stores in Thailand, after commencement of collection of used dry batteries in 2022 in collaboration with CP ALL Public Co., with the aim of helping reduce the environmental impact in the long term.

The companies have installed collection boxes at 1,000 7-Eleven stores, which was the goal set when the project kicked off, and have been spreading the initiative across Thailand. Continued … 

Line Man Launches Eco-Friendly “No Condiments” Feature in Food Delivery

Line Man delivery service has introduced its “No Condiments” green choice feature for food delivery service, following the success of its “No Plastic Cutleries” feature. This new feature has already reduced over 20 million condiment packets in two months.

Positive signs are emerging that Thailand’s food-safety protocols are improving after its efforts to ban harmful herbicides and pesticides, paraquat and chlorpyrifos, and limit the use of glyphosate proved a success, a seminar was told.

Mercedes Benz signs pact to produce EVs in Thailand

Mercedes Benz (Thailand) has signed a contract with its Thai partner to make battery-powered electric vehicles in Thailand, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke said on Monday.

Chai said the German automaker has signed a contract hiring Thonburi Automotive Assembly Plant Co., its long-term partner in Thailand, to make Mercedes Benz EVs over the next 10 years. Continued … 

Electric Bangkok boat taxis to launch in July

An on-demand electric boat taxi service developed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) is due to begin operating in July, around the time the BMA looks set to launch the city-wide expansion of its app-based motorcycle taxi-hailing service, Krung Thep Thanakom Co (KT), the BMA’s business arm, revealed on Sunday.

The boat taxi service, which is designed to connect with Bangkok’s electric rail systems, public bus services and taxi motorcycle services, aims primarily to support the city’s tourism promotion. Continued …

Four Points by Sheraton Phuket Patong Beach Resort has completed the installation of a series of new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in its parking lot. This forms part of the hotel’s mission to create a cleaner, greener future for Phuket.

This is just the latest example of how the resort is advancing its commitment to sustainability. The hotel is already reducing its waste, water usage and carbon emissions, and single-use plastics are being eliminated across the property, with reusable glass bottles and natural straws having been introduced to replace disposable plastic items.
