Number of days over 35C surges in world’s scorching capitals

The number of days reaching a sizzling 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in 20 of the world’s largest capitals – from Delhi to Jakarta to Buenos Aires – has risen 52% over the past three decades, a think tank analysis found on Friday.

More than 300 million people live in the world’s 20 most populous capital cities, where they are uniquely vulnerable to rising temperatures fueled by climate change, as asphalt and buildings absorb and retain heat. Continued …

Aminta Permpoonwiwat, Thailand’s youngblood climate leader, is a UN climate activist on a mission to unleash the potential of Thai girls and women.

Her path into climate activism began in her school’s debating club, where she geared up for battle by researching global warming. But after realizing the scale of the climate crisis, she quickly became frustrated with the limited impact of debate. Continued …

Ajinomoto’s MSG factory reveals new recipe for eco-operations

Umami. The word sounds as delicious on the lips as the legendary flavor that caresses the taste buds of millions in Thailand every day.

We recently decided to seek out the source of this culinary “miracle” – the fifth basic taste after sweet, salty, sour and bitter. The quest led us to Ayutthaya, where we were invited to peek behind the scenes at the factory owned by Ajinomoto, responsible for 94% of Thailand’s umami market. Continued …

Greenpeace Challenges Carbon Capture Effort in Thai Gulf Protest

The Gulf of Thailand’s EEZ–Activists from Greenpeace flagship Rainbow Warrior conducted a peaceful banner protest against a proposed offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) site at the Arthit fossil gas field located in the Gulf of Thailand’s exclusive economic zone to highlight the fossil industry’s greenwashing.

Greenpeace Thailand campaigner Alliya Moun-Ob on board the Rainbow Warrior said, “With my own eyes, I can see the proposed CCS project at fossil gas field is doing nothing to do with a low-carbon pathway, but a license for the one of the biggest climate polluters in Thailand, PTT Exploration and Production Public Co. (PTTEP), to continue killing our climate and making a lot of profit. Continued …

Mapping Destructive Dam Projects along the Mekong River

International Rivers has released a map illustrating sites of struggle along the Mekong River where communities and allied civil society groups have been able to hold their ground —significantly delaying the planned development of destructive hydropower dams — and sacrifice zones where the build out of destructive hydropower dams has pushed ahead.

Despite consistent mobilization by riparian communities and civil society groups from the riverbanks to parliamentary, judicial and corporate arenas, along with submissions from Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission and National Ombudsman, the state-owned Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) has taken the side of vested business interests by signing long-term power-purchase agreements (PPAs) with three new dam projects on the lower Mekong River mainstream: Luang Prabang (1,460 MW), Pak Lay (770 MW), and Pak Beng hydropower projects (912 MW). How restoration can help coral reefs

Record-high sea temperatures are bleaching coral reefs worldwide and putting a new focus on attempts to restore these key marine ecosystems. Here is an overview of how coral restoration is being done around the world:

Restoration begins with obtaining coral, sometimes by breaking it off from a healthy reef. These pieces can be broken into smaller bits in a process called microfragmentation. Continued …

Thai car buyers’ preferences shifting

Thai consumers’ interest in purchasing battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has declined over the past year, while hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) have emerged as strong contenders, almost on par with BEVs, a survey by the multinational consultancy Deloitte shows.

The percentage of Thai respondents expressing interest in buying a BEV fell to 20% this year from 31% in 2023, the 2024 Global Automotive Consumer Study shows. Interest in HEVs, meanwhile, has jumped to 19% from 10%. Internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles remain the top choice but have shown a steady downward trend, falling to 32% from 36%. Continued …

Chinese automakers roll out EVs in line with Thailand’s EV3.0 policy

Chinese automakers have started rolling out electric vehicles (EVs) assembled in Thailand in the local market, in compliance with the government’s EV3.0 policy, which aims to balance locally produced vehicles with exports.
