The circular economy – this future utopia where waste is not wasted – has entered the business lexicon as we recognize the size of the problem we’ve created for the planet. Every year, globally, we dump 2.12 billion tons of waste in the environment and an astounding 99% of everything we buy is discarded within six months.
The volume of discussion and debate about the circular economy has tripled over the past five years, according to the Circle Economy Foundation. While the dialogue has become louder, the size of the circular economy has, in fact, shrunk. Cambodian court jails environmental activists
Ten activists from the Cambodian environmental group Mother Nature were found guilty on charges of plotting against the government and insulting the king, the group’s founder said on Tuesday.
Five of the defendants from the conservation group were arrested outside the court in Phnom Penh immediately after the verdict, founder Alejandro Gonzales-Davidson said. Continued …
Bangkok to grow another one million trees
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced on social media platforms on Tuesday that its 1-million-tree campaign has already reached its goal, two years ahead of schedule.
Making Bangkok greener with 1 million more trees, big and small, was one of the flagship policies of Bangkok Gov. Chadchart Sittipunt. He expected to reach the number by the time his four-year term ends in 2026. Continued …

How marine sanctuaries are helping to save an iconic Thai crab
Floating through the crystal-clear waters off the east coast of Thailand, fisher Sutham Hemmanee spots a large female crab amid the morning’s haul, its underside swollen with the promise of offspring.
“A female crab like this can produce millions of babies,” the 57-year-old says, pointing to the bulging yellow pouches attached to the crab’s stomach. “We put these egg-carrying females in the crab bank.” Continued …
Indorama funds to go toward PET recycling
Bangkok-based plastics and packaging materials producer Indorama Ventures Public Co. has secured a new seven-year loan totaling $200 million from the International Finance Corp. (IFC). Proceeds from the loan will help fund the continued growth of the company’s strategic sustainability programs in India, Thailand and Indonesia.
The loan from the Washington-based IFC, which is a member of the World Bank Group focused on private sector development in emerging markets, provides what Indorama says is a long tenor and flexibility to convert into a sustainability-linked facility based on mutually agreed sustainability targets in the future. Thailand’s rapidly expanding electric vehicle (EV) market could face setbacks if insurance companies refuse to provide coverage for EVs, says the Thai Automotive Industry Assn. (TAIA).
Tokio Marine Safety Insurance announced on Tuesday that its current insurance premiums would “temporarily” not apply to new EV customers, including those who own transferred cars, as it would consider new premium rates on a case-by-case basis. Continued …
Dazzling firefly illumination in Thai mangrove forests a bitter-sweet moment for scientists
An international team of scientists has warned of a dark future for the world’s fireflies, with four Southeast Asian firefly species entered into the IUCN’s (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List of Threatened Species for the first time. The main threats include habitat loss and degradation, climate change and light pollution.
Over 2,200 firefly species have been described globally, with Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific home to at least 400 of the Lampyridae beetles, who use bioluminescence to communicate. In Southeast Asia, the most spectacular displays of glowing, flashing and flickering come from fireflies from the Pteroptyx genus, known as “congregating fireflies”, which occur in large numbers on trees and shrubs along the tidal rivers of mangrove swamps.
