ADB Launches Climate-Finance Program With Thailand

Asian Development Bank (ADB) VicePresident for East and Southeast Asia and the Pacific Scott Morris, along with ADB Country Director Anouj Mehta, launched a new climate finance-focused program in Thailand with Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s Department of Climate Change and Environment (DCCE) Director General Phirun Saiyasitpanich during Morris’ visit to the country in June.

Thailand’s new energy roadmap: a path to eco and economic crisis?

Thailand is set to boost renewable energy used in electricity production from 36% to 51% in its latest power-development plan (PDP). Yet, many experts argue that the plan is a blueprint for failure in meeting emissions targets and ensuring energy security.

Prepared by the Energy Ministry, the PDP is the country’s master plan for power production based on forecasts of rising demand over the next 15 to 20 years. The PDP was aired at a week-long public hearing and will be submitted to the Cabinet for approval soon, said Veerapat Kiatfuengfoo, director of the Energy Policy and Planning Office (EPPO). This project is expected to serve as an important foundation for sustainable environmental projects within Thailand.

The current landfill managed by RWA has the capacity to handle approximately 670,000 tons of waste, ensuring stable revenue. Additionally, RWA plans to gradually expand its landfill project rights in cooperation with various cities and districts in Thailand. The company aims to utilize various types of waste to create new materials and renewable energy, generating additional income. Continued …

The Pressing Issue of Transboundary Haze in Southeast Asia

Air pollution has long been a significant health concern in Southeast Asia, with the issue of transboundary haze taking center stage in recent years. This environmental challenge knows no borders, as smoke from wildfires and land-clearing activities in one country can easily drift across national boundaries, blanketing entire regions in a thick, hazardous haze.

One of the main causes of transboundary haze pollution in the ASEAN region is peatland fires. The ASEAN region is home to 56% of the global tropical peatlands, yet more than 3 million hectares of peatlands in Southeast Asia have been destroyed by fire. Continued …

EV insurance in the driver’s seat

Electric vehicle insurance has emerged as a crucial factor that could shape the future of Thailand’s burgeoning EV industry.

Experts warn of Salween dam’s impact on fish stocks

Experts are concerned that the diversion of water from the Salween River to the Ping River could lead to a decline in fish stocks due to competition from invasive species and genetic contamination.

Fisheries biologist at Maejo University, Apinan Suwannarak, on Sunday said the Nam Yuam Dam project – which could divert up to 1.8 billion cubic meters of water from the Salween River basin along the Thai-Myanmar border to the Ping River, which is located further inside the country – could threaten the survival of up to 98% of the species found along the Ping River.
