For Earth Day 2024, experts are spreading optimism – not doom

Climate change may still be an existential threat to humanity, but as Earth Day 2024 rolled around on Monday, some of the people most concerned about the planet weren’t peddling doom – they’re spreading optimism.

There’s plenty to feel good about, they say: Huge strides toward fighting climate change, decades of work that have led to other environmental disasters being averted – and the reality that hope can help fuel the actions needed to keep tackling the climate crisis. Continued …

Environmental projects in Thailand

Earth Day (yesterday) has been commemorated for 54 years, honoring the planet’s environmental diversity while emphasizing the importance of safeguarding it. Each year, Earth Day pivots on a specific theme and this year’s theme is “Planet vs. Plastics.” #thaiecosolutions

To honor Earth Day 2024, we’re spotlighting the ongoing environmental projects and green initiatives based in Thailand. While we may be doing our bit by recycling, upcycling, opting for locally sourced products, and more, the minds and faces behind these initiatives are honoring the planet we call home on a much larger, more meaningful scale. Scorching heatwave causes price surge in eggs

The sweltering heatwave cooking Thailand’s poultry industry has hatched a price surge in duck eggs, scrambling to 4.6 baht each in Khon Kaen. This unexpected cluck was laid out by The Layer Duck Farmers Assn., joining a recent 20 satang rise in chicken egg prices to 3.60 baht each last week, resulting in a sunny-side-up increase of nearly 6%.

Farmers attribute the increasing prices to a dwindling supply caused by the persistent heat, which places undue stress on the poultry, resulting in reduced egg production. Continued …

Thailand needs to speed up development to meet UN sustainability goals: Srettha

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin announced that Thailand urgently needs to harness innovations to hasten its development. He made this declaration in his opening remarks at the five-day 80th session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

At the current pace, our region will not achieve the (United Nations) SDGs (sustainable development goals) until 2062. The future is calling for us to find innovative ways to bring about sustainable development and to do so in an urgent manner. We need transformative change and digital innovation has become a vital tool for us all to achieve this change,” he said. Continued …

Khao Yai’s Haew Narok Waterfall dries amid Thailand drought

Khao Yai National Park‘s iconic Haew Narok Waterfall has run dry due to prolonged drought conditions, leaving tourists with alternative picturesque natural viewpoints to enjoy.

Amid rising concerns from visitors about the state of the park’s waterfalls, the head of Khao Yai National Park, Chaiya Huai Hong Thong, confirmed that April marks the height of the dry season, characterized by scorching temperatures and a significant lack of rainfall, which has resulted in the drying up of streams that feed the Haew Narok Waterfall. Continued …

Thailand’s sugarcane harvest takes a hit

A significant reduction in Thailand’s sugarcane yield in the 2023–24 crop year has been reported by the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board (OCSB). This decrease in production is attributed to severe drought conditions and is expected to have an impact on the worldwide sugar supply.

Thailand is the second-largest exporter of sugar globally, following Brazil. Therefore, any decrease in its production could cause strain on the global market. Continued …

Toward a just energy transition

Established in 1970, Earth Day is commemorated annually on April 22 to raise public awareness on environmental issues. Therefore, it is crucial to contemplate the strides made in combating pressing environmental issues, such as increased greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

When it comes to reducing or removing GHG emissions from the atmosphere, the transition away from fossil fuels becomes inevitable. However, it also prompts questions about whether this transition is simply just a transition or if it’s a truly equitable and fair transition. Continued …

Thailand’s biggest wind power generator plans solar, hydro expansion

Thailand’s biggest wind power generator, Wind Energy Holdings (WEH), plans to invest into other sources of electricity, including solar, hydro and biomass to back up its capacity, its chief executive said.

Thailand has emerged as Southeast Asia’s leading developer of renewable electricity, with providers obliged to guarantee minimum levels of supply. Continued …

Battery vs. Hydrogen: A Clash of Titans in the race to Zero Emissions

Automotive leaders’ current focus on battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen internal combustion engines (HICEVs) might seem like the main event. However, it’s merely the opening act of a much grander arena: the fight against climate change.

This narrative addresses the critical issue of greenhouse gas emissions from traditional internal combustion engines, recognizing that BEVs and HICEVs may be essential solutions for a broader transformation toward a sustainable transportation future. Continued …

Adopting the Aquaculture of the Future in Thailand

Somporn Kaikaew is the owner of Prapapan Farm in Nakhon Pathom, a city 40 miles west of Bangkok. He farms tilapia fish and white shrimp across 160,000 square meters of land.

We hitch a ride on the back of Somporn’s pickup truck, driving along the dusty roads that separate the fish farm’s large ponds of water. His farm is tightly operated, with the ponds segregated neatly, along with bird traps and scarecrows to deter predators and sophisticated recirculation systems to keep the water clean. Continued …
