Climate change and its impact on Thailand

Thailand emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases but ranks among the 10 countries most severely affected by climate change. This is a significant reason why Thais should be concerned about global climate issues.

A 2021 study by Swiss Re Institute projects Thailand’s GDP could decline 43.6% by 2048 due to temperature increases of up to 3.2°C. Climate change is forecast to take a severe toll on Thai tourism, shifting patterns toward nighttime activities, while having a different effect according to location. Continued …

Climate change: the August deadline

When you spend four years writing a book on climate change, you get to know most of the leading players. I have never seen them so dismayed.

“By August, if we’re still looking at record-breaking temperatures, then we really have moved into uncharted territory,” said climate scientist Gavin Schmidt in April. Well, July 22 was the hottest average global temperature ever recorded – and July 23 promptly broke that brand-new record. Here we are in August, and it is not looking promising. Continued …

Four guidelines for property developers to create eco-friendly projects

Property developers in Thailand need to follow four guidelines in order to become eco-friendly and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, property research and development company LWS Wisdom and Solutions said on Friday.

The property sector is among industries that have been urged to play a role in mitigating environmental degradation. “These guidelines aim to meet consumer trends, as well as the government’s policy to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero carbon emission by 2065,” the company’s managing director, Praphansak Rakchaiwan, said. Thailand in crisis as ‘overwhelming’ number of tourists put pressure on two beautiful cities

Thailand has been grappling with an overtourism crisis that has been putting pressure on two beautiful cities. The issue has become so severe that popular seaside hotspots like Maya Bay, and bustling cities such as Pattaya and Phuket, are dealing with environmental damage and infrastructure stress due to the sheer volume of tourists.

The Southeast Asian country, celebrated for its rich cultural tapestry, idyllic beaches, and bustling cities, has long been a favouhttps://www.morningstar.com/news/globe-newswire/9198962/pan-signs-epa-for-us30-billion-solar-initiative-benefiting-6-million-thai-farmersrite among globetrotters. UOB helps push toward low carbon economy

Large corporations in Thailand have made clear progress in reducing their carbon footprint in support of the nation’s efforts toward a low carbon economy.

Most of their efforts have been focused on reducing the carbon emissions produced directly in their operations by burning fossil fuels, as well as the carbon emissions produced through the energy they purchase. These are known as scope 1 and scope 2 emissions, respectively. Continued …

ESCO to invest in energy-saving equipment, rooftop solar panels

The Thai government is set to approve a plan enabling the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) to manage energy conservation projects for state agencies under long-term contracts, accelerating energy-saving efforts within the state sector.

The approval will support government campaigns targeting 800 state agencies nationwide, which have been instructed to reduce energy consumption by at least 20%. The MEA and PEA will provide energy solutions under a model similar to that of an energy service company (ESCO). Continued …

Revolutionizing Plastic Waste Management in Thai Shopping Malls

A new study conducted by researchers from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok and the Universite de Toulouse in France explores the significant contribution of shopping malls to plastic waste management, assessing various alternatives that balance environmental and economic impacts.

The researchers propose a novel business model centered on resource recovery, based on an analysis of the plastic waste landscape from both macro-factors and key stakeholders’ perspectives. By enhancing plastic recycling rates, this model could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 19.88 tCO2-eq per year and generate an annual revenue of USD 584. Continued …

How a monk and a hippo joined forces to tackle Bangkok’s plastic pollution

Once upon a time this river was filled with fish; now, nothing swims in it any more,” says Wat Chak Daeng temple’s abbot Phra Mahapranom Dhammalangkaro as he looks out over Bangkok’s Chao Praya River.

As a novice monk in the 1980s, he remembers seeing children playing in the river and people scooping up handfuls of water to drink. But when he became abbot of Wat Chak Daeng more than 25 years later, those bucolic images were a thing of the past. Instead, when he arrived at the 240-year-old temple, he was saddened by the sight of the dirty river and the rubbish-strewn grounds surrounding it. Continued …

Thailand launches network for standardized small EV batteries

A public-private network was recently launched to promote cooperation to develop technology for the making of standardized swappable batteries for small electric vehicles (EVs). This development matches the government’s policy of making Thailand an EV hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

(TESTA) at the International Energy Storage Forum 2024 in Bangkok on July 5. Continued …
