Thwaites ‘Doomsday Glacier’ in Antarctica is melting much faster than predicted

A study released this week added new fears to the fate of an important glacier in Antarctica and its impact on sea-level rise.

The Thwaites Glacier on the vast West Antarctica Ice Sheet is commonly called the “Doomsday Glacier” because of its potential to significantly raise sea levels by as much as 10 feet globally, inundating low-lying coastal communities and displacing millions. Continued …

Air Pollution Links With Heart Disease Highlighted In New Global Study

Millions of people are dying every year from heart disease and strokes, which can be linked to air pollution, according to a new study.

The study by the World Heart Foundation warns air pollution is now “the single greatest environmental health risk”, with half of the nearly 7 million deaths every year to air pollution are from cardiovascular conditions. Continued …

Thailand-Israel introduce process for recycling PVC-contaminated plastic waste

The Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) and Thailand’s National Innovation Agency (NIA) have recently introduced a groundbreaking process for recycling PVC-contaminated plastic waste. The new method, developed through collaboration between SCG Chemicals of Thailand and Israeli startup Plastic Back, utilizes superoxide processes to transform waste into naphtha oil.

This is the first use of such technology in Thailand, with the goal of providing a cost-effective and sustainable alternative to fossil-based naphtha. The initiative, facilitated by the Israeli Embassy’s Economic and Trade Mission, has been praised by Orna Sagiv, Israel’s ambassador to Thailand. Continued …

Thailand’s Sirindhorn Dam Leads Renewable Innovation With Hydro-Floating Solar Hybrid

Sirindhorn Dam in Thailand is at the forefront of renewable energy innovation with its hydro-floating solar hybrid project, showcasing a blend of solar and hydroelectric technologies to optimize both environmental and operational efficiencies. This pioneering project harnesses a combined power capacity of 81 MW, comprising 36 MW from hydro and 45 MW from floating solar panels.

The system operates by deploying solar panels on floating platforms on the dam’s reservoir surface. These panels capture solar energy during daylight, converting it into electricity, which is particularly effective during peak sun hours. This reduces the strain on the hydroelectric component. Could Thailand Become the Next Electric Vehicle Powerhouse?

Several countries are rapidly developing their burgeoning electric vehicle (EV) industries to meet the growing demand for EVs and compete with China when it comes to manufacturing. Asia has come out on top in recent years for producing the cheapest EVs and batteries, even though some of the highest EV demand in the coming years is expected to come from Europe and North America.

With the U.S. looking to decrease its dependency on China for renewable energy products, including EVs, automakers are looking to other Asian countries to develop their cars and batteries, with Thailand appearing increasingly attractive to investors. Continued …

Thailand Faces Economic Question: China and EV Cars

Thailand’s weakening manufacturing base and plummeting competitiveness are key issues ahead of a showdown today between Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and his economic ministers. Indeed, hard questions must now be asked about core assumptions underpinning the country’s economic policies.

Chief among them is the country’s trade and closer economic integration with China. Next, as if to highlight this, is the country’s gamble on EV car technology at the expense of its traditional automotive sector, which has been left reeling with plunging sales both at home and abroad. Continued …

Construction work on a Rayong electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing plant located in Rayong commenced in Q1 2024, after the project was announced in Q1 2023.

According to GlobalData, who tracks and profiles more than 220,000 major construction projects from announcement to completion, the project is expected to be completed by Q4 2025. Continued …

Portugal Is At War With Itself Over ‘White Gold’

For centuries, Aida Fernandes’ family has lived in this village nestled in the rugged mountains that crown the northern border with Spain, with generation after generation grazing cattle and growing grapes in lush green fields.

Then, in 2010, a wildfire — one of the growing number of blazes scorching this part of Europe as the climate changes — engulfed the verdant foothills encircling Fernandes’ ancient home. Continued …

Nex Point creates EV tie-up with Dayun

Thailand’s eco-car segment is likely to face stronger competition from electric vehicle makers as Nex Point Plc, a local assembler of commercial EVs, has teamed up with a Chinese EV maker to embark on a new investment in small EVs.

Nex Point signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Chinese automaker Dayun Automobile Co. on a joint project to produce small passenger EVs in Thailand, according to a letter recently submitted to the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Continued …
