Bangkok ‘facing unprecedented threats from more intense storms’: study

Typhoons in Southeast Asia are forming closer to coastlines, intensifying more rapidly and lasting longer over land due to climate change, according to a joint scientific study released on Wednesday.

Coastal communities and cities like Hai Phong in Vietnam and the Thai capital Bangkok are “facing unprecedented threats from longer-lasting and more intense storms”, a statement about the study said. Continued …

Discover the EEE rating for Sustainable Tourism in Thailand

Sustainable tourism is a crucial approach to promoting environmentally and socially responsible travel. Effective hygiene management is central to this, especially in the current era where tourists demand higher standards of hygiene and cleanliness. Utilizing biotechnology to enhance cleaning efficiency while being eco-friendly is the most suitable option.

Dr. Watson Ariyaphuttarat, president of the Thai Biotech Industry Assn., stated that the association aims to promote tourism through biotechnology for effective hygiene management. This approach not only reduces the use of harmful chemicals but also fosters efficient waste management, reducing long-term environmental impact, which is essential for sustainable tourism. Agroforestry offers Thai rubber farmers a pathway to profit and sustainability

Little by little, the canopy of branches and interlocking leaves closes overhead as our vehicle rollicks deeper into the plantation. Pakamart Tongkam points from the driver’s seat into the stark thicket of rubber trees that now surround us: “When I was a child, I slept out there in a small hut while my mum and dad worked in the plantation through the night.”

Several years later, as an adolescent, Pakamart helped her parents with their daily rubber tapping. The routine was grueling, she says during a visit to Nathawi district in southern Thailand’s Songkhla province, a heartland of rubber production. Rising at 2 a.m., the family would trek through the humid plantation to strip the bark of hundreds of individual rubber trees to collect the milky latex. Continued …

Harnessing the power of clean energy

Attractive investment incentives are necessary to catch the interest of prospective foreign investors but they may not be enough to ensure they will definitely establish businesses in Thailand.

A sufficient supply of renewable power has become an increasingly important factor behind companies’ decisions on whether or not to invest here, as they need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to help decelerate the rise in temperatures globally. Continued …

The Chachoengsao Provincial Court fined a Chinese-owned factory 1.8 billion baht for releasing wastewater into the Jone Reservoir in the central province of Chachoengsao.

THH Moly Processing Co.’s illegal action came to light in 2019 after 2 million cubic meters of water in the Jone Reservoir was contaminated with multiple toxic substances. Locals could not use the water for consumption or agriculture. Continued …

A Path Forward for Asia in the Global Plastic Treaty

Asia, a region greatly affected by mounting plastic waste, presents a unique opportunity to spearhead global solutions. One of the key challenges contributing to the plastic crisis is the widespread use of sachets and single-use plastics (SUPs).

Sachets consist of multiple layers of materials that are difficult to separate mechanically and process for disposal. Often, the only treatment option applied for managing these is incineration, a damaging method with high capital cost, as well as environmental pollution that has a lasting effect on communities’ well-being. Continued …

Law on packaging recycling poses a challenge for Thai exporters

As every organization aims for sustainable business development, they must expand their social and environmental responsibilities. Changing global trade regulations now require products to be eco-friendly and have traceable supply chains to build consumer confidence.

This has become a tool for European countries to block products lacking manufacturer responsibility. Thailand, as an exporting country, cannot avoid these regulations, especially regarding used packaging. Continued … https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/sustaination/40040209
