No sign of a ‘just’ energy transition

As multiple impacts of climate change become more severe worldwide, including in Thailand, the need for an energy transition becomes ever more paramount. To that end, the latest draft of the Power Development Plan (draft PDP2024), which was unveiled in June, is touted by the Ministry of Energy as being consistent with Thailand’s goals of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050 and net zero by 2065 – goals that already lag behind those of most countries.

According to one source, that draft is not only failing to bring Thailand closer to its climate goals but also risks increasing the economic, social and environmental costs. Continued …

New US Solar Duties Would Raise Costs and Threaten Climate Goals, Report Says

Solar panel prices could increase by as much as 66% if the U.S. puts new tariffs on imports from Southeast Asia, threatening goals for an energy source critical to combating climate change, according to an analysis published on Tuesday.

The report by Clean Energy Associates, an industry supply chain advisory firm, is among the first to study the potential impacts of what would be new duties on solar cells and modules from Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand. Continued …

Food waste a major contributor to global warming, Thai company trying change that

Over a billion metric tons of food is wasted each year. Food waste management is crucial — the issue currently contributes 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions at a time when 783 million people around the world face chronic hunger.

According to the most recent UN Environment Program’s Food Waste Index Report, about 28% of food waste is from food services. Now, one Thai company is trying to lower that statistic. Continued …

Climate Campaigners Intensify Court Battles Against Fossil Fuel Industry

Climate campaigners are increasingly turning to the legal system in their fight against the fossil fuel industry, seeking to hold energy companies accountable for their role in driving climate change. A recent report from the London School of Economics (LSE) highlights a significant surge in climate-related lawsuits against energy companies, revealing that the UK has become a major battleground in this legal fight.

The LSE report found that there are currently 132 climate cases in the British legal system, up from 102 a year ago. This positions the UK as the third highest center for climate litigation globally, following the U.S. and Australia. Continued …

Tackling a toxic waste crisis

When the cadmium waste scare erupted in early April, the government attempted to allay public fears by returning the waste from Samut Sakhon to its original landfill in Tak province.

However, recent soil inspections in Samut Sakhon show the impact of the pollution caused by the toxic waste might be more serious. Just moving the toxic waste out of the area is not enough, and more must be done to mitigate the pollution risks. Continued …
