Rising Temperatures Threaten Thailand’s Economy, Tourism, and Future

Thailand emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases but ranks among the top 10 countries most severely impacted by climate change. This stark reality poses significant concerns over the country’s economic stability and long-term viability of its tourism sector.

A 2021 study by Swiss Re Institute projected that Thailand’s GDP could plummet by 43.6% by 2048 due to temperature increases of up to 3.2°C. This would have a profound impact on a country heavily reliant on agriculture, tourism, and fisheries. Continued …

Aviation Emissions to Skyrocket

Air travel is a growing source of emission globally and clean energy analysts believe that it will be one of the most difficult aspects of decarbonization proposals over the coming decades. Airplane emission projections show how North America is expected to remain the biggest source, while Asian markets will be the fastest growing – especially China and India. The Asia-Pacific market as a whole is estimated to remain the runner-up, but close its gap with North America somewhat.

According to data provided by Bloomberg BNEF, carbon emissions from air travel across all continents are expected to rise over the next three decades. Pre-pandemic, North America produced an estimated 293 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from aviation emissions in 2019. By 2050, this is estimated to climb to over 440 million metric tons. Asian-Pacific countries followed closely behind at around 230 million metric tons in 2019 and an expected 418 million metric tons in 2050. Continued …

Move sought for Nakhon Nayok nuclear project

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended that the government relocate a planned 20-megawatt nuclear reactor from Nakhon Nayok and provide more detailed information about the project to the public.

This recommendation follows a petition lodged by the Nakhon Nayok Citizen Assn. in April 2022, which said the Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) may not have adhered to human rights principles in carrying out the project, according to NHRC member Sayamol Kaiyoorawong. Continued …

ASEAN eyes nuclear energy, but airs safety concerns

Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are keen to explore nuclear energy to meet climate commitments and promote energy security, but they still need to overcome concerns over safety and funding, a regional forum heard recently.

“The energy needs of our regions are growing, and finding reliable, sustainable solutions is more crucial than ever. Nuclear energy, with its potential to provide consistent and low-carbon power, is a topic that we can’t afford to overlook,” Beni Suryadi, deputy executive director of the ASEAN Center for Energy, told a forum it organized in Jakarta on Friday. New oil platform close to startup offshore Thailand

Valeura Energy expects production to begin shortly through the MOPU Nong Yao C in license G11/48 in the Gulf of Thailand. It should increase the company’s share of oil production from the greater Nong Yao area to about 11,000 bbl/d at peak.

Last month, two new infill wells drilled from the Nong Yao A facility came onstream. All six horizontal development wells have been drilled for the new Nong Yao C project, with one of the appraisal wells set to be converted to a seventh producer. Continued …

Thailand’s revolutionary plastic road

Thailand’s Department of Rural Roads is planning to use a revolutionary asphalt grade for repairs to the road connecting Muang District with Nakhon Ratchasima Airport. Recycled plastic waste will be used in the asphalt mix for the 3km road stretch. Work on the section of Highway No 3140 will commence in the third quarter of 2024 and continue until the third quarter of 2025.

This is the first time the use of plastic waste in an asphalt mix will have been trialled in Thailand and its use on a busy stretch of road handling high traffic volumes is highly innovative. Similar trials have been carried out in some European countries, as well as in Australia, India and South Africa. Continued …

Plastic Waste-Management Market to Surpass USD49.55 Billion by 2032

The plastic waste-management market is expanding rapidly, driven by escalating environmental concerns and the growing need for effective waste-disposal solutions, increasing plastic production and consumption worldwide, coupled with rising public awareness about sustainability.

The plastic waste-management market demand size was USD37.32 billion in 2023 and is expected to reach USD49.55 billion by 2032, growing at a CAGR of 3.2% over the forecast period of 2024-2032. Continued …

Bang Lamung launches volunteer network to tackle waste crisis

Bang Lamung municipality has launched the Local Volunteer Network (LVN) for the Environment project for 2024. The inauguration event took place at the Wisutthachar Dome and was led by Lt. Col. Jarawat Chinnawat, mayor of Banglamung municipality, alongside other municipal officials.

Ministries get tough on hazardous waste

The Industry Ministry is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and related agencies to draft a plan to assist areas recently contaminated with chemical waste, its boss told media on Monday.

Nattapol Rangsitpol, permanent secretary of the Industry Ministry, went on to say that he is aware of the problems caused by the illegal dumping of hazardous substances in Rayong, Ayutthaya, Chachoengsao, Nakhon Ratchasima and Phetchabun. The ministry has dispatched a team to monitor complaint hotspots while it tries to find a lasting solution. Continued …

Thailand Races to Stop Toxic Waste Cargo

Thai authorities are racing to stop about 100 shipping containers allegedly filled with hazardous industrial waste from Albania reaching the nation’s ports.

Basel Action Network, a U.S.-based nonprofit that tracks toxic trade, which previously alerted Malaysia to illegal e-waste shipments, last week informed Thailand that containers the organization believes is filled with potentially harmful electric arc furnace dust were heading its way. Thailand’s electric vehicle sales poised for a new surge

Thailand is rapidly becoming an electric vehicle manufacturing hub, attracting investment from companies like BYD and BMW through incentives. EV sales surged, aiming for 30% production by 2030.

Government policies, such as tax incentives, emissions regulations, and infrastructure investments, are encouraging automakers to accelerate the transition toward electric vehicles (EVs). This shift in the global automotive market equilibrium is favoring the increased adoption and production of EVs over traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Continued …

Thailand Advances in the Race for Electric Vehicle Dominance

BYD, the Chinese new energy vehicle manufacturer and second largest manufacturer by sales globally, and BMW, the renowned German luxury car brand, have both decided to establish manufacturing bases in Thailand for electric vehicles (EVs) and batteries.

Despite their very different journeys, their decision to set up operations in Thailand alongside a multitude of other EV car and battery manufacturers highlights the country’s growing appeal as a manufacturing hub for the industry. Continued …
