The Vital Socioeconomic Importance of Oceans

The direct global economic output of marine fisheries, coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves was $6.9 trillion in 2020, while the global seafood market is estimated to have a value of $81.2 billion in 2023. Additionally, the marine trade and transportation sector generated $5.2 trillion worldwide in 2020.

The economic value attributable to the oceans’ absorption of carbon emissions alone comes to $4.3 trillion. Continued …

The Thailand Environment Institute (TEI) called on the government and related parties to engage in more actions to conserve marine and coastal resources on the occasion of World Ocean Day on Saturday.

Started at the 1992 Earth Summit in Brazil, the World Ocean Day has been observed annually on June 8 with each year, focusing on different aspects of ocean conservation. How Can World Ocean Day Inspire Sustainable Tourism and Ocean Conservation?

The oceans and beaches of our planet are not only breathtakingly beautiful but also vital to the health of Earth’s ecosystems. These natural marvels sustain diverse species, offer spaces for leisure and enjoyment, and bolster local economies. Celebrated on June 8, World Ocean Day is a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect marine ecosystems and promote sustainable tourism by choosing destinations that prioritize ocean conservation.

Thailand’s stunning beaches and islands attract visitors from around the globe. The country has taken significant steps toward promoting sustainable ocean tourism. The Phi Phi Islands are a popular destination where eco-friendly practices are encouraged. Visitors can participate in beach clean-ups, coral reef monitoring, and educational programs about marine conservation. Continued …

World Oceans Day marred by worst coral bleaching to date

Saturday was “World Oceans Day”, but there is no cause of celebration for Pinsak Suraswadi, director-general of Marine and Coastal Resources Department.

The world’s oceans, as well as Thai seas, are seeing global warming raising water temperatures, which is threatening corals. Extensive coral bleaching has been reported in the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand this year, with corals in 21 marine parks being affected. Continued …

The Swedish-based company says the health threats posed by the pollution and contamination caused by the 600 billion bottles manufactured annually pose a grave threat to all living on the planet that demands immediate collective action by world governments and citizens. Continued …

SINTEF collaborates with INSEE to tackle ocean plastic pollution

The Ocean Plastic Turned into an Opportunity in Circular Economy (OPTOCE) project highlights ongoing efforts to transform ocean plastic into a valuable resource within the circular economy.

The project reveals findings from its study on Thailand’s waste-management potential, noting that the cement industry can dispose of low-quality and non-recyclable plastic waste. By adopting co-processing in cement kilns, this approach is expected to reduce coal usage and prevent at least 100,000 tons of plastic waste from entering the ocean annually. Continued …

To Stop Smog Pollution: Empower the Farmers

The annual smog crisis in northern Thailand, particularly affecting Lampang, Chiang Rai, and Chiang Mai, stems from extensive corn burning, largely driven by agribusiness monopolies for animal feed production. Despite widespread suffering and environmental devastation, elites in Bangkok remain indifferent, exacerbating the problem.

To understand the origin of smog, we have to take into account issues other than fires and burning. The truth is that this group of farmers have no choice, just like how city commuters have no choice but to burn fuel when traveling to work. These fields grow corns, which are not serving the locals but the huge meat and animal feed industry in Thailand. Continued …

U.S. moves toward tariffs on Asia solar panels after trade panel vote

The U.S. International Trade Commission voted Friday to begin anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations into certain solar imports from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam, a step that could result in the imposition of new tariffs.

The vote marks the first of four major steps in the review of petitions by manufacturers that allege the imports are being sold at prices below the cost of production and unfairly benefit from billions of dollars in subsidies, including from Chinese government entities. Continued …
